Confirmation of Odesa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov’s Loss of Ukrainian Citizenship by SBU and Authorities
The official decision to revoke the Ukrainian citizenship of Odesa’s mayor, Hennadiy Trukhanov, has been confirmed by Ukrainian security agencies and government authorities.
The Citizenship Commission under the President of Ukraine has made the ruling, which was subsequently endorsed by the presidential decree.
According to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the current mayor of Odesa is a citizen of the Russian Federation, as evidenced by his valid foreign passport issued by Russia after the onset of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
Investigations revealed that back in December 2015, just months after Crimea’s annexation and the outbreak of hostilities in Donbas, Trukhanov obtained a Russian international passport, valid for ten years, serving as proof of his Russian citizenship.
Further examination showed that in 2017, he applied to a Russian court asking to invalidate his domestic Russian passport.
The Moscow court indeed annulled the document, yet in its decision, it explicitly stated that this did not imply the loss of Russian citizenship if it was acquired legally.
According to official findings, Hennadiy Trukhanov remains a Russian citizen, possessing an individual tax number registered with the Federal Tax Service of Russia.
These facts affirm his ongoing citizenship status in Russia, raising questions about his legal standing in Ukraine and potential legal ramifications.
