Merz Calls for Joint Efforts to End the Ukraine War and Seeks Trump’s Support
Merz expressed hope that former US President Donald Trump will join international efforts to stop Russia’s war against Ukraine.
During a speech at the Middle East conference in Sharm El-Sheikh, the German chancellor explicitly called for an immediate ceasefire, emphasizing that the conflict has been ongoing for over three and a half years and poses a threat to the security of the entire European continent.
He stressed that future international efforts must be united, and urged Trump to participate in working toward peace.
Merz highlighted that for Europeans, the war in Ukraine’s east remains the greatest threat to freedom and democracy, underlining the need for coordinated action.
He also called on the United States to reaffirm its support, which has been demonstrated previously, especially in providing assistance to Ukraine and countering Russia.
This stance aligns with broader initiatives, as the politician stated that only combined efforts can bring peace, safety, and stability to the region.
Notably, former President Trump has also voiced opinions regarding the Ukraine situation, indicating that ending the war should be a priority and suggesting that Vladimir Putin could take steps toward resolving the conflict, or face negative consequences.
Trump additionally hinted at the possibility of supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles if the conflict remains unresolved in the near future.
