Macron Affirms Support for Ukraine and Condemns Russian Civilian Infrastructure Strikes
French President Emmanuel Macron publicly commented on his recent phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, reaffirming France’s unwavering support for Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict.
In his post on X (formerly Twitter) on October 12, Macron emphasized that France remains firmly committed to backing Ukraine during these challenging times.
He condemned Russia’s missile strikes on civilian infrastructure and populated areas, describing them as deliberate attacks targeting civilians ahead of winter.
Macron highlighted that France, together with international partners, is exploring ways to provide assistance aimed at restoring critical infrastructure and ensuring essential services.
The French leader reiterated France’s steadfast position and its active participation within the coalition supporting Ukraine.
He also cautiously expressed hope that the conflict might soon reach a peaceful resolution, noting that peace efforts could be boosted if international focus shifts towards negotiations, possibly influenced by developments in other regional conflicts such as between Israel and Hamas.
Macron warned that if Russia continues its aggressive escalation and refuses to engage in negotiations, it will be held accountable.
He called for intensified pressure on Russia’s shadow navy and efforts to disrupt Russian oil supplies, emphasizing the importance of coordinated international actions to aid Ukraine.
Previously, Zelensky and Macron discussed Ukraine’s immediate needs, particularly in air defense systems and missile supplies.
Zelensky stressed that Russia exploits the distraction of Middle Eastern conflicts and internal political tensions to intensify its underhanded attacks, highlighting the necessity of strengthening efforts to counter such tactics.
Both leaders also agreed on expanding programs like PURL and coordinating diplomatic measures with other partners in the upcoming weeks.
