Ukrainian NATO envoy explains reasons behind the request for Tomahawk missiles: signaling Russia and strategic importance
Ukraine’s NATO ambassador, Alyona Hetmanchuk, elaborated on the key reasons and strategic aims behind Ukraine’s push to receive long-range American missiles, particularly the Tomahawk cruise missiles.
She stated that the main objective is to send a clear message to Russia about Ukraine’s readiness to utilize all available means to protect its sovereignty and interests.
Hetmanchuk emphasized that discussions about supplying these missiles are not merely military in nature but also part of diplomatic signaling, aiming to show strength and resolve.
She clarified that there is no confirmed decision yet from President Trump regarding the provision of these missiles.
Nevertheless, the diplomat highlighted the importance of letting Russia understand that all options remain on the table, thereby strengthening Ukraine’s capacity for deterrence and defense.
She stressed the importance of moving beyond air defense toward deep strikes into Russian territory, as protecting Ukrainian skies alone is insufficient; a comprehensive strategy involving offensive capabilities is necessary.
The background to this situation includes reports that the US is considering delivering missiles capable of striking targets deep within Russia, including Moscow, complicating the regional security landscape and Ukraine’s defense efforts.
