Germany Aims to Lead in Drone Production to Support Ukraine and Strengthen National Defense

Chas Pravdy - 07 October 2025 01:30

The German government is intensifying efforts to develop the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) industry with the goal of transforming the country into a global leader in this technological sector.

Economy Minister Catherine Reiche announced that German manufacturing must become a vital hub for developing and mass-producing drones designated to assist Ukraine in its ongoing struggle, as well as to bolster Germany’s own defense capabilities and protect critical infrastructure.

According to the minister, owning advanced drones is no longer just an advantage but a necessity in today’s strategic landscape.

She emphasized that the aim is to establish a high-tech industry centered around artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies capable of rapid response to contemporary challenges.

The government calls for increased cooperation among industrial sectors, small and medium-sized enterprises, startups, and scientific institutions, creating new alliances and mobilizing all available resources.

Reiche highlighted that Europe’s security is closely tied to Germany’s technological readiness, particularly in manufacturing facilities where drones are produced.

She pointed out the significance of drones in both military and civilian contexts: they are crucial for surveillance and safeguarding essential infrastructure such as airports, ports, pipelines, oil refineries, LNG terminals, substations, data centers, and hospitals.

The minister also suggested that the appearance of unidentified drones over Germany could potentially be linked to Russia, indicating recent incidents like the partial shutdown of Munich Airport in late September due to an unknown drone, which led to flight cancellations and delays involving thousands of passengers.

Since 2025, European airspace has faced increasing aerial threats, making the development of advanced defense technologies an urgent priority.

The question remains whether Germany is prepared to meet these emerging security challenges — a crucial issue for geopolitical stability.
