Denmark Poised to Ban Children’s Access to Social Networks Up to Age 15: New Initiatives and Challenges for Parents
The Danish government is preparing a new legislative proposal that aims to impose significant restrictions on the use of popular social media platforms among youth.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced that the country seeks to protect its younger generations from the negative influences of the digital environment, focusing particularly on elementary school children up to the age of 15.
She emphasized that mobile phones and social networks not only distract children from their studies but also risk stealing the most precious part of their childhood — their ability to focus and develop naturally.
The official announcement was made during her speech in parliament, where Frederiksen noted that although the draft law is not yet finalized, its concept has already generated considerable public interest.
Activists in Denmark have gathered over 50,000 signatures advocating for a ban on TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram for children under 15.
At the same time, Frederiksen highlighted the importance of parental consent, suggesting that parents should be able to authorize their children, starting from 13 years of age, to create social media accounts.
The support for such initiatives has been expressed by various political leaders, stressing the need for stricter regulation of the digital space.
Furthermore, the Danish government is urging the European Union to implement stricter standards for verifying users’ age online, which could become an effective tool for protecting youth from potential digital risks.
