European Commission Announces Near Completion of Ukraine’s Screening Process Ahead of EU Integration Negotiations

Chas Pravdy - 29 September 2025 21:55

The European Commission has taken a significant step forward in Ukraine’s European Union integration process, as announced by Enlargement Commissioner Marta Cerar during her official visit to Zakarpattia.

According to the high-ranking European official, the screening process—an assessment of Ukrainian laws for compliance with EU standards—is nearing completion, paving the way for the commencement of the first rounds of negotiations.

In less than a year, experts meticulously examined over 100,000 pages of Ukrainian legislation, demonstrating Ukraine’s strong commitment and active engagement in EU integration efforts.

This development confirms Ukraine’s strategic goal of becoming a full member of the EU, which requires implementing a series of crucial reforms.

Commissioner Cerar expressed optimism that the European Commission would soon give the green light to initiate negotiations, marking a pivotal milestone in Ukraine’s path toward membership.

Discussions on the screening results are scheduled for meetings with government and parliamentary officials in Kyiv on October 1, which will be decisive for future progress.

Experts emphasize that successful integration depends on deep reforms in rule of law, anti-corruption measures, and sustainable economic development.

During her visit, which lasts from September 29 to October 1, Cerar will meet with Ukrainian leadership and visit key regions to personally assess the reform implementation.

The support from the EU remains firm, yet several procedural steps must still be completed before official negotiations can commence.

President Zelensky submitted Ukraine’s EU membership application on February 28, 2022, and the country gained candidate status by June of the same year—an important milestone in Ukraine’s long journey toward aligning with European values and standards.
