Placement of the «Oreshnik» missile system in Belarus: controversial intentions and international reactions

Chas Pravdy - 27 September 2025 05:28

The international community’s attention has recently been drawn to Belarus’s decision to deploy the Russian missile system «Oreshnik» on its territory.

Official statements confirm that this move aims to enhance the country’s security and independence, but many questions remain about the true motives and potential consequences.

According to representatives of the Center for Countering Disinformation under the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council, the deployment of «Oreshnik» should be viewed in the context of Russia’s information campaign aimed at increasing influence and destabilizing the region.Belarusian Foreign Ministry officials stated that the decision to deploy the system is necessary to guarantee national security and is not part of a new arms race or confrontation.

However, recent reports indicate that the second «Oreshnik» launch was unsuccessful — the missile did not take off as scheduled.

Russia has not publicly commented on this situation, adding to its ambiguity.Interestingly, reports suggest that in 2024, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko personally requested Vladimir Putin to deploy the «Oreshnik» system in Belarus.

During the upcoming «Zapad-2025» military exercises, which are also closely monitored by the United States and other international observers, the mobile missile system was tested.

These developments raise concerns about Moscow and Minsk’s strategic intentions and their potential impact on regional security.
