Volodymyr Zelensky candidly discusses the conditions for stepping down and future strategic goals

Chas Pravdy - 25 September 2025 13:23

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently shared his vision regarding the end of his presidential term and the circumstances under which he might leave office in an interview with the American publication Axios.

However, he emphasized that he does not currently intend to lead the country during peaceful times and aims to focus on achieving peace and stability in Ukraine.

Zelensky mentioned that his primary goal is to end the war, rather than seeking re-election or remaining in office endlessly.

At the same time, he pointed out that elections in Ukraine are complicated at present due to security issues and constitutional constraints, even during ceasefire periods.

Nevertheless, he did not rule out their possibility if security conditions significantly improve and a stable ceasefire is achieved.

Zelensky stated that if serious efforts and political agreements are made, he would be ready to appeal to the parliament with a request to organize elections to legitimize the government and give the country a new impetus for recovery.

He further added that his main objective is to finish the war and restore Ukraine’s peaceful life, not to stay in office at all costs.

His decision on resignation or remaining in position depends solely on the situation on the front and political negotiations, he noted.

This indicates that the Ukrainian president wants to respond to current challenges but clearly prioritizes stability and ending the conflict.
