Kremlin’s Reflections: Do the US and Ukraine Really Seek to Address the Root Causes of the Conflict?

Chas Pravdy - 17 September 2025 14:28

According to recent statements by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, amidst a broad propaganda campaign surrounding the war in Ukraine, voices are again being heard about the supposed intentions of the US leadership to make profound changes in the underlying causes of the conflict.

Lavrov claims that the Biden-Washington administration allegedly understands the necessity of resolving the conflict’s primary reasons and supposedly works towards this goal, especially during the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, which supposedly demonstrated a shared understanding.

According to this, Trump allegedly publicly criticized Ukraine’s NATO accession, calling it a cause of the conflict, which, in turn, suggests the need to correct Western foreign policy.

Meanwhile, Western politicians—specifically former and current NATO secretaries general—advocate the view that Ukraine’s NATO membership prospects remain unchanged, emphasizing that this step is vital for ensuring the country’s security.

However, there is considerable speculation surrounding the true motives and goals of both sides, complicating the search for a historic resolution to a conflict that has long transcended a regional war and become a global challenge.
