European Commission Plans to Accelerate the Ban on Russian Oil Imports Amid New Sanctions Initiatives

Chas Pravdy - 17 September 2025 01:21

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced plans to speed up Europe’s gradual withdrawal from Russian oil imports, part of broader EU sanctions efforts aimed at increasing pressure on Moscow.

This significant move was announced following her discussions with U.S.

President Donald Trump, where topics of expanding sanctions against Russia were explored.

Ursula emphasized that Russia’s economy, heavily reliant on fossil fuel revenues, directly finances and sustains the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

To cut off this funding, the EU is set to accelerate its measures to reduce dependency on Russian oil.

Meanwhile, in the United States Congress, concerns are being raised over potential support for Russia by Hungary and Slovakia through continued oil purchases, with threats of political and administrative sanctions against these nations.

Donald Trump reaffirmed his readiness to impose severe sanctions on Russia, but noted that such measures would only be feasible if all NATO countries unanimously refuse to purchase Russian energy resources, including oil.
