The Past of Expectations: When Will the War in Ukraine End According to the UN Forecasts

Chas Pravdy - 16 September 2025 21:31

The international community and experts continue to analyze potential scenarios for the development of the Ukraine conflict, especially regarding when this large-scale war, which has been destroying lives for over a year, might conclude.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres recently made an honest prediction, which, in his view, does not offer much optimism.

He stated that a quick end to the conflict currently seems unlikely, given the tense and dynamic situation.Guterres emphasized that the main priority remains the immediate cessation of hostilities.

However, he noted that such an agreement must be based on the UN Charter, international norms, and General Assembly resolutions.

He pointed out that Moscow opposes simple ceasefires and insists on a comprehensive global deal, which is now extremely challenging and nearly impossible to implement. Most Ukrainians do not expect the war to end this year.

According to surveys, very few people remain optimistic.

Guterres stressed that escalation and continued combat operations are likely to persist for some time.

The war causes immense suffering to civilians, destroys infrastructure, and disrupts the lives of millions. The main issue today is the stark contrast between the positions of the parties: Ukraine strives to restore its territorial integrity and stop aggression, while Russia insists on maintaining control over occupied territories.

Earlier, US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent expressed a more optimistic view, suggesting that the conflict could end within 2–3 months if the European Union imposes strict tariffs on countries continuing to buy Russian oil.

Nonetheless, most experts remain sceptical and believe that a long-term peace can only be achieved through balanced diplomacy and international support.
