Russian Drones Over Poland: When Silence Becomes a Threat to European Security

Chas Pravdy - 16 September 2025 12:23

Recent developments involving Russian drones entering Polish airspace have raised serious concerns across the international community.

NATO’s response to this threat has been surprisingly cautious and sluggish, prompting questions about the alliance’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to such provocations.

In this context, it is essential to remember the lessons of the Cold War, as while many in the modern world have forgotten these lessons, Moscow has clearly retained and is using them to achieve its strategic objectives. In an open interview with ZN.UA, renowned economist and geopolitics author Neil Ferguson stated that the Kremlin’s ultimate goal is to dismantle NATO unity and push its member states toward reckless responses.

Ferguson emphasized that the fundamental Cold War lesson was that deterrence works only when accompanied by a firm and proportionate response.

The threat posed by Russian drones violating Polish airspace is not just a provocation but a significant escalation, especially considering that Poland is part of NATO.

According to Ferguson, a lack of a strong response signals weakness on the Western side and could encourage further aggressive actions from Moscow.

“If we do not implement a proportionate and decisive response and punish Russia on its own territory, Putin will conclude that the West fears escalation and that its weakness allows Moscow to act with impunity,” Ferguson stressed. He expressed hope that U.S.

leaders, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, would consider Cold War experiences and show resolve in responding appropriately.

Only a firm and resolute response can prevent further escalation and establish stability in the region.

Ferguson also emphasized that current policy must be cautious but not weak, as failure to do so could have catastrophic consequences for European and global security.
