Rubio Comments on US Sanctions Against Russia and Their Potential Impact

Chas Pravdy - 16 September 2025 05:21

U.S.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio provided a detailed analysis of the current situation regarding possible new sanctions that the Washington administration might impose in response to Russia’s actions.

According to Rubio, the U.S.

government already has a clear understanding of which restrictive measures could potentially be implemented against the Kremlin, but the final decision will rest with President Donald Trump.

In an interview with Fox News, a transcript of which was released by the U.S.

Department of State, Rubio emphasized: “We are fully aware of the sanctions we can apply, and at some point, the president will make a decision to do so.” He also added that Trump would not announce a predetermined timeline but would decide voluntarily.

Furthermore, the Secretary of State highlighted that the U.S.

encourages European partners to take similar steps and impose sanctions, especially in energy sectors.

Rubio noted that some European countries are still purchasing Russian oil and resources, and the United States urges a coordinated and consistent approach on this issue.

He dismissed any assumptions that the Moscow meeting in Alaska emboldened Vladimir Putin to escalate conflicts, including drone strikes in Poland or other actions against Ukraine.

The background of these developments is that on September 13, Trump announced on social media platform Truth Social his readiness to impose serious sanctions on Russia, provided NATO countries also cease buying Russian energy.

He stressed that his patience with Putin is exhausted and accused European nations of insufficiently firm policies, claiming they only “talk but do not act.” The spokesperson added that further sanctions depend on whether allies intensify their restrictions and stop importing Russian energy resources.
