EU Preparations for New Sanctions Against Israel Amid Gaza Escalation
The European Union is considering implementing a new package of sanctions against Israel in response to the escalating conflict in Gaza.
Sources indicate that the European Commission, together with the European Parliament, is preparing a comprehensive set of measures that will be announced on September 17.
The plan involves not only suspending some trade privileges under the Association Agreement between the EU and Israel but also imposing targeted restrictions on certain government ministers who support or promote extremism.
Official representatives emphasize that such measures are essential given the growing international concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis and violence in Gaza.
Germany and Sweden have already expressed support for strengthening sanctions, voicing their concern over recent developments.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, speaking last week in Strasbourg, stated that the EU is ready to adopt restrictive measures affecting trade and diplomatic relations with Israel, although she acknowledged that approval from member states might face challenges due to differing views on the Middle East conflict.
Meanwhile, Israel has outlined conditions under which it might consider destroying parts of Gaza if its security is threatened.
The United Nations has called for an immediate halt to the ground operations, warning of possible war crimes and crimes against humanity.
No final decision on sanctions has yet been made, and the issue remains under diplomatic negotiation and pressure.
