Trump criticizes Europe for insufficient resolve on Russia sanctions

Chas Pravdy - 15 September 2025 03:22

Former U.S.

President Donald Trump has once again publicly condemned European countries for their perceived passivity regarding sanctions on Russia.

He argues that Europe is only ‘talking but not acting,’ continuing to purchase oil and energy resources from Moscow.

Trump emphasized that the future of U.S.

sanctions depends on how seriously European nations will commit to their own restrictive measures and whether they will cease buying Russian energy supplies.

The ex-president stressed that sanctions in Europe are currently ‘not tough enough’ and called on European allies to either synchronize or even surpass the U.S.

in this direction. In response to questions about potential NATO sanctions against Russia, Trump accused the alliance and European states of inaction, highlighting their ongoing energy imports from Moscow.

‘Europe — my friends, but they buy oil from Russia.

We cannot be the only ones implementing these restrictions,’ he stated.

At the same time, he underscored that European sanctions are insufficiently strict and urged them to strengthen their policies.Trump insisted on coordinated action: ‘I am ready to introduce new sanctions and urge our European partners to do the same so that we act together and as effectively as possible.’ He expressed hope that Europe will respond accordingly and start acting faster, noting that currently, they only promise but do not take concrete steps. The president also clearly addressed the agreements with European countries to stop buying Russian products.

‘The deal was that they should not buy anything from Russia — be it natural gas, cigarettes, or anything else,’ Trump emphasized.

‘This should be clear — no cooperation with Moscow in this regard.

And when I say I will impose serious sanctions, I mean very strong ones.’The background of these statements suggests that on September 13, Trump hinted on his Truth Social account that he is prepared to impose serious sanctions on Russia if NATO countries agree to do so and stop purchasing Russian oil.

He warned that his patience with Vladimir Putin, the Russian leader, is running out and indicated that such measures could be implemented swiftly if needed.
