Johnson Declares: US Ready to Impose New Sanctions on Russia Under Trump’s Leadership
US House Speaker Mike Johnson announced plans regarding the future course of American foreign policy amid ongoing tensions surrounding Russia and the war in Ukraine.
According to Johnson, Congress, in partnership with the administration of Donald Trump and the Senate, aims to intensify efforts to introduce new sanctions that could significantly increase pressure on Russia and potentially influence the conflict’s trajectory.
However, he emphasized that the final decision on sanctions rests with the president—he must sign any legislative act for it to become law.
Johnson highlighted the strong desire within Congress to implement such measures, stating they have been long overdue.
Nonetheless, he pointed out that Congress cannot act entirely independently: “We cannot take this step on our own—the president must approve it.
It requires a partnership.” The speaker acknowledged that the current Biden administration adopts a more cautious stance regarding sanctions, balancing international considerations.
At the same time, Johnson commended former President Donald Trump for his bold leadership on the global stage, praising his efforts in achieving peace and stability worldwide.
He expressed belief that Trump could utilize the same strength and approach to finally end the Ukraine war.
Most Americans, he said, are eager to see this bloody conflict conclude and peace restored to the region.
It is also reported that Trump has begun to doubt his influence over Putin, with conditions for sanctions becoming increasingly difficult to implement, raising questions about the immediate prospects for new measures.
