EU Responds to Trump’s Demand to Halt Russian Oil Imports

Chas Pravdy - 15 September 2025 16:30

In response to recent remarks by former U.S.

President Donald Trump, who called for NATO countries to unilaterally cease purchasing Russian oil as part of new sanctions against the Russian Federation, the European Union reaffirmed its well-developed strategy of phased abandonment of fossil fuels coming from Russia.

EU Commissioner for External Affairs and Energy, Paola Pìnô, emphasized that since the onset of the full-scale invasion, the EU has been working on a clear plan and roadmap to gradually eliminate reliance on Russian energy supplies.

She pointed out that current measures include a planned phase-out of Russian gas, backed by legislative proposals and specific deadlines.

Pìnô also confirmed that within the framework of the 19th sanctions package, the EU is considering accelerating its plans to reduce dependence on Russian energy sources, aiming for a complete withdrawal from Russian gas and oil by 2027.

Furthermore, she stressed that the EU’s official positions and actions remain independent of public statements made by U.S.

politicians.

EU Commission Spokesperson Olof Gilly added that EU member states are focused on implementing their strategies and do not comment on individual statements made by Trump’s social media posts before official decisions and documents are released.

Earlier, American media reported that Trump proposed a unique or provocative condition for tightening sanctions against Russia — demanding all NATO countries cease buying Russian oil.

Many analysts and political experts view this proposal as largely symbolic or rhetorical, as actual implementation remains distant.

Meanwhile, the global community often ridicules Trump’s ability to effect real change or mocks the lack of concrete actions amidst the geopolitical situation.
