Rising German Concern Over Possible Russian Aggression: Survey Findings

Chas Pravdy - 14 September 2025 14:32

In recent weeks, concerns among German citizens about Russia potentially attacking NATO member countries, particularly Poland and Lithuania, have significantly increased.

This surge in anxiety follows an incident where Russian drones penetrated Polish airspace, sparking widespread public alarm and discussions on national security.

According to a survey conducted by INSA for the German publication Bild, about 62% of Germans expressed fears of a possible attack from Russia on one of NATO’s nations.

Meanwhile, 28% consider such a scenario unlikely and remain uncertain about the prospects of military escalation, while 10% are unsure.

The survey also revealed growing support for harsher sanctions against Moscow: nearly half of the respondents (49%) advocate for an immediate halt to all natural gas and oil supplies from Russia to the European Union, whereas 33% oppose such measures.

Additionally, 51% support the utilization of frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine’s needs.

The survey involved 1,002 participants and was conducted on September 11-12, highlighting the high level of concern within German society regarding regional security.

Earlier reports indicated that thousands of Poles are voluntarily enlisting in military training amidst increasing military threats from Russia, which further heighten tensions in the region and underscore the importance of strengthening NATO’s defensive capabilities.
