Trump Sets New Conditions for NATO: Sanctions on Russia Dependent on Alliance’s Unity

Chas Pravdy - 13 September 2025 15:29

Former U.S.

President Donald Trump unexpectedly announced his readiness to impose serious economic sanctions on Russia, contingent upon the collective agreement and decisive action by NATO member countries.

The statement was made through his social media account, Truth Social, where Trump emphasized that such comprehensive sanctions could only be implemented if all allies in the alliance unify and commit to this course of action.

He argued that if NATO countries ceased purchasing Russian oil, the ongoing conflict over Ukraine could be brought to an end swiftly.

At the same time, it is known that Trump believes NATO’s current efforts are insufficient and that the alliance is wasting its time by not exerting enough pressure to accelerate victory in the conflict.

He also pointed out that the ongoing war is the result of policies by former President Joe Biden and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, omitting any direct mention of Vladimir Putin, the Russian leader responsible for initiating the aggression.

Previously, Trump repeatedly stated that his patience with Putin is running out, emphasizing that the U.S.

and European partners need to develop their own strategies of resistance against Russian aggression.

U.S.

Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent further highlighted that Washington is prepared to intensify sanctions against Moscow if European countries follow suit by halting the purchase of Russian oil and gas, which are critical to the Kremlin’s economic stability.
