Reflections on the Incident with Russian Drones in Poland: Mistake or Kremlin’s Strategic Move?

Chas Pravdy - 12 September 2025 00:24

The tension surrounding the incident involving Russian unmanned aerial vehicles entering Polish airspace on the night of September 10 remains high.

U.S.

President Donald Trump commented that this attack might have been an accidental mistake on Russia’s part, although he emphasized that he remains dissatisfied with the overall handling of the situation.

According to him, despite the possible misunderstanding, it is crucial to promptly investigate the causes of the event and prevent similar incidents in order to avoid escalation of the conflict.

Over the past few days, Polish military forces responded to the detection of multiple drones during Russia’s massive attack on Ukraine.

Officials reported that at least 19 drones were intercepted, with the first reports of their coming from Belarusian territory.

Following an official NATO request, the alliance invoked Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which mandates consultations among allies when the security of any member state is threatened.

However, Reuters notes that NATO does not consider this incident as an act of aggression or invasion.

According to reports, a Russian drone fell on a military facility in the Masovian Voivodeship, located several dozen kilometers from Warsaw.

Political and military analyst Petro Herasymenko suggests that this operation by Russia is a carefully planned tactic aimed at achieving several goals.

Specifically, Moscow seeks to create obstacles to Ukraine’s air defense supplies and pressure Poland to reduce its logistical support for Ukraine.
