Ex-Brazilian President Bolsonaro Sentenced to Over 27 Years in Prison for Attempted Coup Plot

The former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, faced a significant legal setback as he was sentenced to more than 27 years imprisonment for his involvement in planning and orchestrating an attempted coup in 2022.

This verdict marked the culmination of months of investigation and court proceedings scrutinizing extensive criminal activities associated with efforts to undermine the democratically elected government.

According to sources, including CNN, four out of five Supreme Court justices agreed to find Bolsonaro guilty on all five counts of charges, which include conspiracy to overthrow the government, participation in armed criminal organization, attempt to violently abolish Brazil’s democratic institutions, and commit violent acts against state institutions and damage to government property during the storming of government buildings by his supporters on January 8, 2023.

Prosecutors detailed plans involving the use of explosives, firearms, or poison to eliminate key political figures such as left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

The 70-year-old politician denied all charges, and his defense team has indicated that an appeal may be filed.

This ruling marks a decisive point in Brazil’s judicial response to radical actions aimed at destabilizing the nation’s democracy and upending its constitutional order.
