Sikorsky comments on NATO’s stance regarding the shootdown of Russian drones and missiles over Ukraine: an official perspective

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has voiced his stance concerning NATO’s current policies amidst recent Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian territory.

During a press conference on September 10, he emphasized that NATO had not yet made any definitive decisions about intercepting Russian UAVs and missiles flying over Ukraine.

This indicates that the alliance remains in a cautious neutral stance, refraining from official involvement in Ukraine’s military actions, while supporting Kyiv’s efforts to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.According to Sikorski, Ukrainian military officials have repeatedly called on allies to bolster military aid, particularly in the form of air defense systems and aerial support.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, in a call with Sikorski later that day, again stressed the importance of intensifying NATO’s efforts to help Ukrainian forces destroy threats that jeopardize both Ukraine and the broader security of the alliance.A significant aspect of the discussions involved the probable goals behind Russia’s drone attacks, including those near Polish borders.

Sikorski speculated that these assaults are aimed at destabilizing the regional situation and increasing tensions among neighboring countries.

He also highlighted that Polish pilots operate under strict tactical restrictions, primarily focused on ensuring the safety of civilians on the ground, and cannot act over other countries without explicit orders. While NATO and Ukraine remain optimistic about their ability to respond, no official measures regarding intercepting Russian UAVs in Allied airspace have been implemented yet.

Sikorski underscores that maintaining sovereignty and security in the region remains a primary concern as countries continue to confront Russian aggression.
