Nuclear Security: Calls for Restraint Amid Rising Tensions Around Ukrainian Nuclear Facilities
Following recent events near Ukrainian nuclear power plants (NPPs), the international community and experts in nuclear safety are once again emphasizing the critical importance of maintaining peace and stability around these strategically vital sites.
The IAEA has issued a renewed appeal for maximum military restraint near nuclear infrastructure, particularly at Rivne and Mlyniv NPPs, where numerous safety violations have been recorded.
Director Rafael Grossi expressed deep concern over nighttime military activity close to these key facilities, warning that any combat operations around nuclear objects could lead to catastrophic consequences for the entire planet.
According to reports, nine drones flew within three kilometers of the Khmelnitsky NPP overnight, while Rivne NPP reported observing 13 unmanned aerial vehicles in its surveillance zone.
This occurred just a week after the local IAEA team reported heightened military activity, intensifying fears regarding safety risks.
Grossi emphasized that such military actions violate key nuclear safety principles, including the physical integrity of facilities and the safety of personnel.
Meanwhile, the situation around Zaporizhzhia NPP remains tense, with similar concerns extending to other plants such as South Ukrainian and Chernobyl NPPs.
The international community is expected to continue monitoring developments and call for non-interference in operations to prevent potential nuclear disasters.
Additionally, the Kremlin announced the possibility of cooperation with American colleagues regarding Zaporizhzhia NPP, adding further tension amid ongoing shelling and military activities around Ukraine’s nuclear assets.
