Iran and IAEA Reach Agreement on Resuming Nuclear Inspections Amid Rising International Tensions

Chas Pravdy - 10 September 2025 00:47

On Tuesday in Cairo, Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced a significant step towards restoring nuclear inspections that were temporarily halted following a series of military strikes on Tehran’s nuclear facilities in June.

This agreement resulted from lengthy diplomatic negotiations between IAEA leadership and Iranian officials and aims to rebuild trust in the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program while laying the groundwork for further compliance with international commitments.

The details of the accord remain confidential for now; however, officials warn that any future sanctions imposed by the West could nullify the achieved agreement.

Tehran has warned that if sanctions are reintroduced, the inspection mechanism will become invalid.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi highlighted that this accord represents an important move toward reducing tensions and returning to constructive dialogue.

Nonetheless, the critical issues revolve around the specifics of implementation—particularly whether Iran can allow inspectors access to all facilities and provide necessary reports on its enriched uranium stockpiles.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian stated that any measures concerning sanctions, including the re-imposition of UN Security Council resolutions, would render the deal void.

Despite damage and destruction at some nuclear sites, Iran retains substantial stocks of enriched uranium—up to 60%, just short of the approximately 90% needed for nuclear weapons.

According to the latest IAEA report, Iran’s current reserves contain enough material to produce multiple nuclear warheads if enrichment activities continue.

Earlier this week, Iran’s parliament passed legislation to suspend cooperation with the IAEA and restrict inspections without approval from the Supreme National Security Council.

These developments complicate negotiations, but the IAEA emphasizes ongoing dialogue to reconcile Iran’s legal obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty with the technical requirements of nuclear transparency, thereby striving to ensure regional and global security stability.
