EU Court Upholds Sanctions Against Yanukovych and Abramovich, Rejects Appeals

Chas Pravdy - 10 September 2025 18:46

The European Court of Justice’s recent decision marked a significant milestone in reaffirming the legality of sanctions imposed on former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.

Radio Free Europe correspondent Rikard Jozvyak reported that judicial authorities, after thorough review, dismissed the appeals of both individuals, affirming the legitimacy of the restrictive measures.

This ruling takes on particular importance as the European Union plans to extend its sanctions list by approximately 2,600 individuals and entities linked to Russia.

Some countries, including Hungary and Slovakia, have opposed this expansion, aiming to remove influential oligarchs such as Mikhail Fridman and Alisher Usmanov from the blacklist.

According to reports, this decision could strengthen the EU’s position in applying increased pressure on Moscow, reducing the influence of oligarchs on policy decisions and contributing to regional stability.
