Death of Investigative Journalist in Sumy Region Sparks Concerns and Unanswered Questions

Chas Pravdy - 08 September 2025 19:43

In the town of Yampil in the Sumy region, a tragic event occurred — a well-known local journalist and former district council deputy, Oleksandr Takhtay, was found dead in his own apartment.

The incident has stirred widespread concern among the public and law enforcement agencies, given Takhtay’s reputation for exposing corruption schemes, particularly related to the construction of fortifications in conflict zones.

His courageous journalistic activities had repeatedly put him at risk, receiving threats and even suffering from attacks, highlighting the potential motives behind his sudden death.Preliminary reports indicate that his body has been sent for forensic examination to establish the exact cause of death.

It is known that in late August of this year, Takhtay reported being targeted — his summer house was shelled, and a smoke grenade was found in his apartment.

He suspected the involvement of former or current security service officers, including an SBU operative and a reservist officer, though security officials vehemently deny any link to these incidents.Currently, investigators are focused on uncovering the circumstances surrounding Takhtay’s demise.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated on hooliganism, and investigations are ongoing.

The results of forensic tests should clarify whether his death had any connection to his journalistic work, which involved revealing large-scale corruption schemes during the construction of defensive structures in Donetsk region, where officials allegedly embezzled nearly half a billion hryvnias.

This incident underscores the dangers faced by journalists who challenge powerful corrupt networks and highlights the urgent need for stronger protection of civic activists in Ukraine.Meanwhile, investigations into the financial misconduct during the fortification projects are progressing — law enforcement has received authorization to wiretap phone calls and correspondence of the suspects involved.

All these events emphasize the pressing issues of safety for media workers and public activists in the country.
