BRICS Summit: Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin’s Virtual Participation Sparks Geopolitical Discussions
During the upcoming BRICS summit, which will be held virtually this time, key world leaders are expected to participate — Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The event is organized by Brazil, aiming to involve member countries in discussions on pressing trade issues and geopolitical challenges, especially in light of increasing tensions with the United States.
Unlike Beijing and Moscow, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided not to participate in the summit in person; instead, India will be represented by the Foreign Minister.
According to Bloomberg reports, Xi Jinping will deliver a speech virtually on September 8, while the Kremlin has confirmed Putin’s participation.
The main goal of the initiative is not only to address trade barriers introduced during Trump’s administration but also to consolidate efforts among leading developing economies to support multilateral cooperation and counter sanctions and restrictions.
The summit is led by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who emphasizes the need for forging new alliances to address global challenges.
Recently, BRICS has gained increased attention from Washington, especially due to the expansion of the bloc with new members from Asia and the Middle East, raising concerns in the U.S.
Furthermore, in July, Donald Trump threatened new tariffs against countries that join the “anti-American policies” of the grouping.
Despite these threats, BRICS nations are strengthening cooperation with China and regional partners, as seen in diplomatic activities such as Xi’s participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, meetings with Putin and Modi during the Beijing military parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of World War II’s end, among other diplomatic contacts.
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Modi remains cautious about these developments, focusing on national priorities.
Experts believe the main aim of the summit is not only economic cooperation but also laying the groundwork for a potential unified stance on global economic and security issues in the future.
