Portugal to Ramp Up Military Procurement from Europe and the U.S.: New Horizons in Defense Investments

Chas Pravdy - 06 September 2025 18:28

As part of its strategic move to bolster national defense capabilities, Portugal is preparing to make extensive purchases of military equipment from both the European Union and the United States.

These steps reflect the country’s aim to enhance its defense potential, support industrial development, and respond to current security challenges.

Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel announced that Portugal is investing in cutting-edge drone manufacturing and modern military hardware, including aircraft and ships, although specific models and figures remain undisclosed due to procurement regulations.

He emphasized his support for U.S.

President Donald Trump’s call to increase NATO defense spending to 5% of GDP, viewing it as a vital measure for collective security.

Rangel also highlighted the importance of flexible procurement approaches, considering the high demand on defense industries and the fluctuating supply chain delays.

The diplomat also commented on the recent funicular accident in Lisbon, noting that among the victims was a Ukrainian citizen, exemplifying the close international ties.

He stressed that the West must continually pursue its peace strategy in Ukraine and consider additional sanctions against Russia, including secondary sanctions, to exert further pressure.

Rangel urged the U.S.

to introduce new levels of sanctions and strengthen cooperation with China and India to find pathways to cease hostilities.

Portugal is also moving towards broader international recognition—reports indicate that the country aims to officially recognize Palestine in September.

Ukrainian President Zelensky, in a phone call with Portuguese Prime Minister Moutonegro, reaffirmed Portugal’s unwavering support for Ukraine since the onset of the full-scale invasion, emphasizing the significance of such backing in the ongoing conflict.
