Zelensky Holds Crucial Meeting with Slovak Prime Minister: Focus on Energy Independence and Regional Cooperation
In Uzhgorod, a highly anticipated political summit took place between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
During the talks, leaders discussed several key issues vital to both countries and the region as a whole.
One of the main topics was the energy independence of Europe, as Ukraine and Slovakia are actively working to reduce reliance on Russian energy resources.
Zelensky, in his official Telegram channel, informed that he discussed with President Trump recent negotiations and Ukraine’s efforts to promote peace and security through international coalitions.
He emphasized: “We talked with Prime Minister Fico about the importance of jointly advancing European integration, strengthening economic and energy collaboration, and ensuring regional security.” An important part of the discussion focused on strategic cooperation in energy and infrastructure sectors, which both nations seek to develop further to bolster their stability and influence.
Zelensky highlighted Slovakia’s support for Ukraine’s EU accession aspirations as a sign of friendship and mutual understanding.
At the same time, given the ongoing conflict over Russian energy supplies, the topic of the Druzhba pipeline — a crucial route for Russian oil to Europe — was addressed, as Ukraine has repeatedly targeted its infrastructure in attacks.
Slovak and Hungarian foreign ministers have appealed to the European Commission to investigate the situation.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán previously wrote to Donald Trump regarding these pipeline attacks and reportedly received a response indicating concern.
Recently, Trump stated that Europe must stop buying Russian oil to deprive Moscow of the funds needed to continue its invasion of Ukraine.
Therefore, the partnership between Ukraine and Slovakia gains additional strategic importance amid the complex geopolitical environment and EU integration efforts.
