Ukraine and Slovakia Develop Joint Energy Projects: Cooperation in Oil, Gas, and Electricity on the Horizon

Chas Pravdy - 05 September 2025 21:30

Uzhgorod has become a key platform for high-level negotiations between Ukraine and Slovakia aimed at expanding their collaborative energy initiatives, which are crucial for both nations and the regional stability.

During a visit to the city, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed a series of cooperative ventures in the fields of energy production and transportation.

Particular emphasis was placed on the potential of jointly transporting Ukrainian oil through Slovak territory.

According to Slovak Deputy Prime Minister Denisa Sakova, an important meeting is scheduled in Bratislava on Monday, where details of this project, its implications, and future prospects will be examined.

She highlighted that efforts are also underway to produce hydrogen within Ukraine and to efficiently utilize biomethane to meet EU requirements.

Special focus is given to energy infrastructure development, especially the trans-border energy transfer route via the Mukachevo – Velké Kapošany crossing, which is expected to reach completion by 2032.

However, disagreements remain on some issues, requiring further negotiations for compromise.

Notably, in January 2025, the Slovak government issued an open letter sharply criticizing Ukraine over its stance on Russian gas transit.

Kyiv maintains that the current transit agreement expires on January 1, 2025, and refuses to sign a new agreement with Russia, aligning with Ukraine’s strategy to reduce dependence on Russian energy supplies.
