Russia’s Upcoming Offensive in Donetsk: Plans and Challenges for the Ukrainian Army

Chas Pravdy - 05 September 2025 02:52

In an effort to strengthen its positions and seize strategically important territories despite fierce resistance from Ukrainian forces, the Russian military command is preparing a large-scale offensive in the Donetsk region this fall.

According to official sources and analysts, the primary targets are three cities: Pokrovsk, Myrnohrad, and Dobropillia, which could potentially alter the course of hostilities and impact the overall situation on the front lines.

Reports indicate that the Russian group ‘Dnepr’ has received a new strategic order—to quickly capture these cities and establish a wide corridor aimed at encircling Ukrainian defenses.

The main push is directed toward the Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad agglomeration.

An insider explained that Russian troops are actively completing the formation of so-called ‘lines’ for advancement, bringing additional reserves from other parts of the front and creating obstacles for Ukrainian units.

The strategy is to form this ‘corridor’ and attack Dobropillia with the goal of encirclement and further advances into other key regional cities.

First, they plan to break through the defenses in Dobropillia, and upon success, focus efforts on seizing Myrnohrad and Pokrovsk, intending to connect these areas into a single controlled zone.

Experts warn that the enemy aims to encircle Kostiantynivka to cut off Ukrainian logistical routes that supply and support the front.

However, military sources report significant losses for the Russian side: over 150 enemy soldiers were neutralized just in the past day on the Pokrovsk frontline.

For more than ten months,Attempts to take Pokrovsk have continued, with daily losses of 150 to 200 troops, indicating intense resistance from Ukrainian forces and the difficult nature of the enemy’s offensive operations.
