Fico expresses optimism about rapid end to Ukraine war following talks with Putin in China

Following a recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in China, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico made a statement suggesting that the prolonged and devastating war in Ukraine could soon come to an end.

During a press conference in Uzhhorod on Friday, the politician explained that his contacts with the Russian leader aim to facilitate a swift halt to military actions and stabilize the situation.According to Fico, discussions with Putin included prospects for deepening cooperation between the two nations.

The prime minister emphasized that the main focus was on returning to diplomatic and political solutions that would bring relief to the international community and Ukraine.

He firmly denied that energy sanctions or blockades against Ukraine were discussed; instead, the dialogue centered around direct and transparent bilateral cooperation between Slovakia and Russia.Fico also highlighted Slovakia’s support for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union and its willingness to share its experience to assist Kyiv in the accession process.

President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope that Slovakia would actively contribute to providing security guarantees for Ukraine, an essential step toward regional stabilization.
