Belarusian Media Amplify Information Warfare in Moldova, Pushing Pro-Russian Politics and Candidates
Amid escalating political tensions in Moldova, Minsk has intensively utilized its media outlets to sway internal processes and influence public opinion in the neighboring country.
Between June and August 2025, five state-funded Belarusian TV channels released at least 54 videos focused on Moldova and its political landscape.
These videos uniformly propagated narratives supporting pro-Russian politician Igor Dodon while criticizing the Moldovan government led by President Maia Sandu.
According to monitoring by FactCheck.BY, these videos amassed over 3.8 million views in total.
The peak of dissemination occurred during Dodon’s visit to Minsk on July 12–13, when more than 20 videos were published within just two days.
The content promoted false claims about election rigging, external control of Moldova by the EU and NATO, rising tariffs linked to European integration efforts, and presented Dodon as the sole alternative leader.
Experts note that this coordinated campaign involved Belarusian media outlets CTVBY, ONT, BelTA, and NEWS.BY, with the primary goal of eroding public trust in the electoral process and bolstering pro-Russian forces within Moldova.
Recently, Moldovan President Maia Sandu issued a stark warning: a victory for pro-Russian parties in the parliamentary elections could wipe out the country’s recent progress and threaten its independence, transforming Moldova into a tool for Moscow’s hybrid warfare against Ukraine.
