Sweden Considers Potential Sale of Modern Gripen Fighters to Ukraine Under Certain Conditions

Chas Pravdy - 04 September 2025 00:29

The Swedish Ministry of Defense has expressed willingness to consider the possibility of selling Ukraine modern Gripen fighter jets, although this plan hinges on several critical conditions and circumstances.

According to Defense Minister Peter Johnson, any prospective deal depends on the conclusion of Russia’s military actions against Ukraine.

He emphasized that Sweden is actively engaging in dialogue with Ukraine regarding the potential delivery of aircraft, particularly focusing on the new variant—Gripen Echo, which is utilized in Sweden and Brazil and has garnered Ukrainian interest.

Johnson stated that a final agreement would be more probable if peace and stability are restored in the region.

At the same time, the defense official mentioned that Sweden is open to discussions about transferring older versions of the Gripen, namely the C/D models, which are part of its current arsenal.

Johnson also revealed that he discussed these options with his Ukrainian counterpart during a visit to Kyiv last week.

Beyond military support, Sweden is already assisting Ukraine financially by allocating 750 million Swedish krona (approximately 66.4 million euros) through the Ukraine Facility program, making it the first EU country to provide additional funding through this mechanism—strengthening Kyiv’s resilience amidst ongoing conflict.
