Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has openly expressed the possibility that Ukraine could follow the example of South Korea in its security and economic development strategies, despite the absence of a formal peace treaty with Russia.

In an interview with Le Point magazine, he emphasized that while the South Korean scenario has its unique features, Ukraine can consider its principles to achieve stabilization and a prosperous future.Zelensky pointed out that crucial to the success of such a scenario is the support of allies, particularly the United States, which guarantees South Korea’s security by preventing provocations from North Korea.

He also stressed that Ukraine faces significantly larger threats in scale: its population is much bigger than that of North Korea, and the military and economic challenges are unprecedented. The Ukrainian leader highlighted the importance of strengthening defensive capabilities, including systems like Patriot, which South Korea also employs.

However, he noted that comparing countries without considering their geographic, political, and social differences would be unwise, and that Ukraine’s focus should be on adapting economic and institutional models, emphasizing development, innovation, and partnership. In conclusion, Zelensky stated that while fully implementing the South Korean model in security matters is unlikely, the experience of South Korea can serve as a valuable foundation for developing stabilization strategies and economic consolidation, especially in a context demanding new approaches tailored to Ukraine’s unique realities.
