Friedrich Merz Ensures: Germany Holds Back from Sending Troops to Ukraine — Position and Outlook

Chas Pravdy - 03 September 2025 06:35

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in his recent interview, made a clear and unequivocal statement denying the possibility of dispatching German troops to Ukraine.

According to him, Berlin is currently not considering the option of providing military assistance through the deployment of soldiers on Ukrainian territory, even in the event of a ceasefire or peace agreement coming into place.

Merz emphasized that all crucial decisions on this matter will be made solely with the approval of the German Bundestag, and only if all parties involved, including Russia, agree.

At the same time, he pointed out that the primary support for Ukraine remains the efforts to strengthen its armed forces and ensure its defensive capacity.

He added that any decision regarding Germany’s military involvement in the conflict will only be contemplated in the distant future — after a long-term ceasefire or peace treaty is signed.

Merz expressed significant doubts about Germany’s possible participation even after such agreements.

Regarding the international context, he stressed that any further steps can only be taken with the consensus and dialogue with Russia, warning that this path is fraught with numerous obstacles and will take considerable time.

The background includes reports that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently stated that his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin are not yet ready for a personal meeting.

According to media sources, U.S.

President Donald Trump has decided to leave the initiative of organizing a summit between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine to the two countries themselves, thus stepping back from direct involvement in the negotiation process.
