UN urges comprehensive ceasefire in Ukraine and global peace at SCO summit
At the significant Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit held in Tianjin, China, UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a powerful call to action regarding the urgent need to halt military hostilities in Ukraine.
In his speech, he emphasized that the time has come for a just, inclusive, and sustainable peace, which can only be achieved through an immediate ceasefire, adherence to international law, and UN resolutions.
Guterres stressed that such a ceasefire should be the first step toward restoring peace not only in Ukraine but across the globe.Furthermore, he expressed concern over escalating humanitarian crises in regions such as Gaza, the Horn of Africa, and others, calling for the release of hostages and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid to populations suffering from conflicts.
Highlighting the importance of protecting civilians in conflict zones like Sudan, Myanmar, the Sahel, Afghanistan, and beyond, he called for dialogue and concerted efforts to promote peace. The Secretary-General underlined that SCO has unique potential to facilitate this process, as the platform unites countries capable of impacting global stability and peace.
The Tianjin summit gathered leaders from major nations including China, India, Turkey, Armenia, Pakistan, Russia, and others.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin made his usual ambiguous statements about the war, voicing hope for a swift resolution and advocating diplomatic settlement.Ukraine’s diplomats noted that the summit’s final document contained no references to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which they see as a failure of Moscow’s diplomatic efforts.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that the absence of strong wording reflects Russia’s inability to achieve its goals diplomatically.
