Merkel Calls Putin ‘Potentially the Most Serious War Criminal of Our Time’

Chas Pravdy - 02 September 2025 19:32

In the current geopolitical context, statements made by the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are capable of drawing global attention and igniting new debates regarding Russia’s role on the international stage.

In an interview with Sat.1, scheduled to air on Tuesday evening, Merz made a bold statement, describing Vladimir Putin as ‘possibly the most serious war criminal of our time.’ According to him, the Russian president is responsible for large-scale crimes committed in Ukraine, which could be considered among the gravest in recent history.

The Chancellor emphasized that the world must be prepared to respond clearly to war crimes and should not show leniency to potential perpetrators.

Merz has previously accused Russia of serious human rights violations and acts of terrorism against civilians, but his recent characterization of Putin as ‘potentially the most serious war criminal of our era’ marks an intensified criticism.

Recall that in spring 2023, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin in connection with the illegal deportation of children from Ukrainian territories.

Meanwhile, Austria’s foreign ministry announced its readiness to facilitate negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to resolve the conflict, including possible consultations with the ICC to avoid arrests during diplomatic visits.

This highlights the ongoing complexity of the international situation surrounding the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the role of global institutions in seeking resolution.
