Germany’s Chancellor Proposes Geneva as Venue for Putin and Zelensky Talks Amid Diplomatic Uncertainty

Chas Pravdy - 02 September 2025 19:32

Diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine are intensifying on the international stage.

Amidst uncertainties about a possible in-person meeting between the leaders of the two nations, Germany has put forward a new proposal: Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested holding negotiations in Geneva, considering it a neutral and accessible platform suitable for both sides.

This statement was made during the ‘Coalition of Determined’ conference, where Merz also expressed his willingness to recommend the Swiss city as the future summit location.

Currently, negotiations remain hypothetical, as officials from various countries voice conflicting positions: Turkish President Erdogan has stated that Zelensky and Putin are not yet ready for a face-to-face meeting, while the United States prefers to stay out of the direct negotiation process, leaving the organization of such talks to the parties involved.

Meanwhile, President Zelensky emphasized that within two weeks, ongoing diplomatic efforts and Russia-US negotiations will conclude, and he awaits responses regarding a meeting with Putin and further sanctions.

These developments highlight an active search for peace and stability through diplomatic channels in the region.
