Trump Accelerates Diplomatic Efforts Toward Future Meetings with Putin and Zelensky: Urgency and Strategy

Chas Pravdy - 07 August 2025 06:35

Former U.S.

President Donald Trump continues to demonstrate a keen interest in swiftly establishing personal contact with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine.

According to sources, his team has been tasked with organizing meetings with President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelensky as soon as possible.

This initiative emerged following a visit by Trump’s administration representative, Stephen Vitkoff, to Moscow, where he held discussions with the Russian leader.

CNN, citing high-ranking officials in the White House and European governments, reports that Putin himself proposed a direct meeting with Trump during recent negotiations.

In response, Trump confirmed his intentions during a phone call with European leaders, expressing a desire to arrange tripartite talks involving Zelensky.

Diplomatic sources indicate that despite the complexities of organizing such high-level meetings, Trump is insisting on holding them within the next week or two.

The exact location remains under discussion, with several options being considered.

Public reports suggest that Russia has expressed interest in meeting with Trump, and the former president has indicated his openness to dialogues with both Putin and Zelensky.

The U.S.

administration emphasizes that the main goal is to end the war and find a path toward peace.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Vladimir Putin has been largely isolated internationally and has not held personal meetings with an American president.

The last summit between the leaders took place in Geneva in 2021 under Joe Biden’s administration.

Trump has previously stated that he intends to meet with Putin after returning to the White House in January 2025.

However, current developments appear significantly more concrete, signaling a new phase in diplomatic efforts.

Analysts believe such contacts could substantially shift the balance of power ahead of broader negotiations.
