Trump to Host Armenian and Azerbaijani Leaders at the White House: A Potential Peace Accord Announcement

Chas Pravdy - 06 August 2025 09:29

U.S.

President Donald Trump has scheduled a significant meeting at the White House with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan—Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev—set to take place on Friday, August 8.

This high-stakes gathering aims to advance a long-awaited peace agreement between the two nations that have been embroiled in conflict for more than a decade.

According to sources cited by The Washington Post, including senior administration officials, there is a possibility that an official announcement of a peace treaty might be made during this meeting.

Armenia and Azerbaijan recently held negotiations last month in the United Arab Emirates, but no formal resolution has been declared yet.

Despite ongoing efforts and multiple diplomatic discussions throughout the year, tensions persist, and longstanding hostilities continue to threaten regional stability.

This initiative follows Donald Trump’s previous declarations while in office—where he expressed willingness to facilitate peace in the region.

Moreover, amidst regional tensions, Russia has accelerated its military build-up in Armenia, reportedly reinforcing its strategic presence there.

This meeting exemplifies Trump’s broader strategy of engaging in international conflict resolution, which has seen him publicly support peace agreements elsewhere, such as in Africa and South Asia.

In June, Trump praised a peace deal mediated by the U.S.

between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, and claimed to have brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan after escalations in their conflict.

Several global leaders have nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, recognizing his efforts.

The Cambodian deputy prime minister and the Israeli prime minister publicly supported such nominations, and Pakistan announced its official endorsement last month.

The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is scheduled for December, raising speculation about whether Donald Trump might receive this prestigious recognition for his diplomatic efforts.
