Hungary: Man Detained for Plotting Assassination of Viktor Orbán
The Hungarian authorities have officially announced the arrest of an individual accused of planning an assassination attempt on Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred in July 2025 when the suspect posted an online call to find the ‘best hired assassin’ to carry out the attack, promising to pay for it in forints or other currencies.
Law enforcement acted swiftly to identify, apprehend, and detain the suspect.
Following the arrest, he was interrogated and charged with preparation for murder under aggravating circumstances.
Official sources confirm that the suspect admitted to his guilt.
Budapest Prosecutor’s Office has already filed a motion for his detention, citing the risk of reoffending.
The court is expected to decide on his remand in the near future.
It is worth noting that similar cases have occurred in Hungary before.
In June of this year, a court in Tolyna detained a 44-year-old man who openly threatened Viktor Orbán and other public figures with beheading.
Furthermore, in May 2024, an assassination attempt was made against Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who survived the attack.
According to investigators, the attack was politically motivated, and opposition forces have been accused of planning and executing the act in some media reports.
