Civinsky Expected to Be Appointed Head of the Bureau of Economic Security: Details and Political Context

Chas Pravdy - 06 August 2025 00:20

On Wednesday, the government is scheduled to officially appoint Oleksandr Civinsky as the director of the Bureau of Economic Security (BEB), marking a culmination of a lengthy selection process for this crucial position.

According to sources within political circles, the decision is nearing completion, especially after Civinsky successfully passed additional checks, including a polygraph test, during the week.

This step was personally announced by Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko to dispel public doubts about his integrity.Recall that the winner of the competition, Oleksandr Civinsky, was publicly declared the leading candidate for the position earlier, with support from law enforcement and anti-corruption sectors.

However, despite the announcement, the government repeatedly refused to approve his candidacy in September due to internal political and security concerns.Despite official statements that his candidacy is supported by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), concerns remain over possible external influences, particularly from Russia.

In June, the competition commission received a recommendation to conduct additional polygraph testing on several candidates, including Civinsky, due to relatives with connections to Russia.

These circumstances led to a halt in the approval process at the Cabinet of Ministers.Sources indicate that after the additional checks, the government’s stance on Civinsky’s appointment is expected to change soon, signaling a readiness for a final кадровий decision.

This demonstrates the government’s intention to implement reforms in economic security transparently and reliably, ensuring trust and safeguarding national interests.
