Support for Sanctions and Military Strategy: How Trump Voters Respond to the Ukraine Conflict

Chas Pravdy - 05 August 2025 07:22

Recent sociological surveys reveal that a majority of supporters of former U.S.

President Donald Trump strongly back tough measures against Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

According to a poll conducted by the Vandenberg Coalition and TargetPoint, a polling firm affiliated with the Republican Party, 76% of Trump voters support imposing sanctions on Russia if Vladimir Putin refuses negotiations to end the war.

Furthermore, 87% see Russia as the primary threat to U.S.

national security, showing consistency with previous surveys.

Additionally, 74% believe there is a chance that Russia might invade other countries if Putin successfully completes the occupation of Ukraine.

Only 18% think the U.S.

should not support Ukraine in its fight against Russia.

A significant 88% express concern about potential cooperation between Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea in the context of the war against Ukraine, with 65% considering this cooperation as highly or extremely alarming.

Regarding international efforts to resolve the conflict, 57% blame Putin for lack of progress in peace negotiations, highlighting his reluctance to pursue peaceful settlement.

Meanwhile, 76% support sanctions on Russian oil exports in response to Moscow's refusal to negotiate, exemplifying a clear preference among voters for pressure through economic means.

Recently, Trump announced a ten-day ultimatum to Putin starting July 29, demanding a ceasefire, criticizing Moscow’s inaction.

However, reports suggest Trump has shifted his stance, focusing more on political pressure and increased military aid to allied European countries supporting Ukraine, thus emphasizing a changing approach in the United States’ strategy to end the war.
