New Developments in the Investigation of Former Special Prosecutor Jack Smith: Political Motives and Legal Battles

Chas Pravdy - 03 August 2025 05:42

In the United States, a high-profile news story continues to draw attention to the ongoing political battles surrounding former government officials.

The U.S.

federal agency has officially launched an investigation into former special prosecutor Jack Smith, who, after the completion of Donald Trump's first term, was involved in two criminal cases against the ex-President.

This move follows suspicions that Smith may have violated the Hatch Act — a regulation prohibiting federal officials from using their positions for political activities.

The Office of the Special Counsel (OSC), an independent agency responsible for investigating federal employee conduct but lacking authority to bring criminal charges, confirmed to the press that the investigation is underway.

This step appears to be part of a broader political effort aimed at discrediting Trump’s opponents.

Smith, who resigned in January after Trump’s electoral victory, has not issued any statements on the investigation.

Recently, Senator Tom Cotton accused Smith of intentionally misusing criminal cases to harm Trump’s election bid, dubbing him “a political actor disguised as a public servant,” a statement that has sparked widespread discussion on social media platforms.

Smith, known for prosecuting war crimes, previously filed two criminal charges against Trump: one for mishandling classified documents and another for attempting to overturn the 2020 election results, which culminated in the January 6 assault on the Capitol.

However, due to delays and legal obstacles, including a Supreme Court ruling that grants broad immunity to former presidents, these cases have yet to reach court.

Following Trump's election victory, Smith dismissed both cases, citing Justice Department policies that prevent prosecuting sitting presidents.

Nonetheless, in January, he published a detailed report stating that enough evidence existed to bring a conviction.

Trump dismisses all accusations as politically motivated attempts to hinder his political comeback.
