Indian Citizens Urged to Support Domestic Production Amid US Tariff Measures

Chas Pravdy - 03 August 2025 09:29

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation urging Indian consumers to make mindful purchasing decisions amidst new tariffs imposed by the United States on Indian goods.

During a large rally on August 2nd, Modi emphasized that in today's global economic turbulence, it is crucial to bolster domestic manufacturing and encourage internal consumption to shield India from external economic shocks.

His appeal comes at a time when the country navigates complex international trade tensions, particularly after the US implemented 25% duties on Indian imports.Modi highlighted that the global economy is currently mired in uncertainty, with rising risks of slowdown and financial market volatility.

He called on Indian citizens to prioritize buying locally produced goods, reinforcing his longstanding 'Make in India' campaign.

The recent US tariffs have given renewed urgency to this message, underlining the importance of safeguarding national economic interests in an unpredictable global environment. He further stressed that protecting the interests of farmers, small enterprises, and youth employment are key priorities for his administration.

As other nations focus on their own economic agendas, India must remain vigilant in defending its economic sovereignty.

The prime minister’s emphasis on internal production reflects a broader strategy to strengthen self-sufficiency and reduce dependence on external markets. This internal focus occurs against a backdrop of tense US-India relations, with recent US criticisms over India's high tariffs and threats of additional sanctions, especially concerning Indian imports of Russian energy and military equipment.

Despite mounting pressure from Washington and European Union directives, India continues to increase its purchases of Russian oil, maintaining a strategic stance amid ongoing global energy conflicts and geopolitical uncertainties.
