Putin Unprepared for Serious Negotiations, Says UK Foreign Secretary David Lemmie

Chas Pravdy - 02 August 2025 20:41

During his anniversary period in office, UK Foreign Secretary David Lemmie provided a comprehensive and detailed analysis of the current situation surrounding Ukraine and the prospects for diplomatic negotiations with Russia.

In a July 2 interview with The Guardian, Lemmie shared his impressions from his visit to Ukrainian territory and offered predictions about the future of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Russia.

According to the British diplomat, Putin is currently not showing readiness for serious talks due to his imperialistic and maximalist ambitions, which remain unchanged.

'My cautious forecast is that Putin is not prepared for meaningful negotiations.

His aspirations remain highly imperialistic,' Lemmie stated.

He emphasized that the fight of the Ukrainian people for independence and sovereignty is monumental and inspiring, especially because of their persistence and resilience.

Lemmie pointed out that even if Ukraine were isolated internationally, the Ukrainians would still commit to their cause and continue partisan actions, which serve as a significant source of inspiration worldwide.

The British diplomat also promised to assist Ukraine—specifically, by helping transfer blocked funds from the sale of Chelsea FC, owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

Recently, Lemmie called for an immediate ceasefire, particularly after Russia’s attack on a civilian bus in Sumy, which occurred just after negotiations in Turkey.

He stressed that if President Putin truly seeks peace, Russia must agree to an immediate, comprehensive ceasefire, similar to Ukraine’s approach.

He indicated that serious negotiations from Russia are currently unlikely and that true peace and stability depend on Moscow’s willingness to compromise.
