Putin Explains Causes of Negotiation Disappointments: Excessive Expectations and the Need for Substantive Dialogue

Chas Pravdy - 01 August 2025 15:58

In recent statements made during an international affairs conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin voiced his perspective on the issues that arise during diplomatic negotiations with various conflict parties.
He emphasized that most disappointments and failures in talks are caused by inflated or unrealistic expectations, often formed among participants or the public.
According to Putin, achieving genuine peace requires engaging in direct, meaningful discussions rather than performing for public image.
Moscow is more interested in tangible steps toward stabilization rather than public relations stunts, which is why the Kremlin proposed the creation of three specialized working groups aimed at detailed analysis and searching for compromises.
Kyiv reportedly responded positively to this initiative.
Putin highlighted that these groups should serve as platforms for finding mutually acceptable solutions, but so far, this initiative has not yet been advanced.
Meanwhile, former U.S.
President Donald Trump has recognized that relying on personal contacts to broker peace agreements in the Ukraine-Russia conflict is unrealistic.
Previously, he threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Russian oil imports if Moscow failed to reach a peace deal.
Certain Indian and Ukrainian enterprises are already refraining from purchasing Russian energy resources, and Indian state-owned oil companies have ceased buying Russian oil to avoid sanctions and punitive tariffs.
