Ukraine Calls for Urgent UN Security Council Meeting Amid Russian Attacks on Kyiv

Chas Pravdy - 31 July 2025 23:29

Following a significant escalation of military actions and a new series of missile and drone strikes on Ukraine's capital, the government of Ukraine has decided to request an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council.
This move was announced by Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga, who emphasized that such a step is necessary to respond to Russia's provocations and its attempt to unleash chaos and destruction in Kyiv once again.
The scheduled Security Council meeting will take place on August 1st, under the agenda item “Support for Peace and Security in Ukraine.” In his statement, Sybiga pointed out that Russia is rejecting all peaceful negotiations and aims to prolong the war.
He called on the international community to intensify pressure on Russia to halt its military actions.
He stressed the importance of demonstrating a firm and decisive stance to protect Ukraine, including applying principled pressure to ensure an immediate, comprehensive, and unconditional ceasefire.
Background to the situation: On the night of July 30th to 31st, Russian forces resumed attacks on Kyiv, deploying drones and missiles.
As a result, 27 locations across the city suffered damage or destruction, with casualties including a six-year-old boy— Matvii Marchenko— who was a martial arts student in Kyiv.
Among the injured was police officer Liliya Stepanchuk.
Additionally, a journalist from Hromadske, Natalia Mazina, and her husband Dmytro Mazin, were wounded when their apartment was damaged during the attack.
Official reports indicate that the death toll from the night assault rose to 16, including two children, and the number of injured increased to 159.
This latest attack underscores the devastating impact of Russian aggression and highlights the urgent need for the international community to step up efforts to support peace and stability in Ukraine.
